Calming classics help life limited children

  • WORCESTER’S Elgar Chorale is holding a concert to raise notes of a financial kind in support of Acorns - but the charity is no stranger to the power of music.

While the choir is excited about its Concert for Hope, which features Vivaldi’s Gloria on the bill, the known calming effect of listening to classical music has proved a particular help in supporting life limited Acorns’ children and their families through often stressful times.

It has already been experienced first-hand by Worcester Acorns’ mum Sadie Lewis, when her daughter Corah brought her school flute group to play at Acorns for the Three Counties.

“It was an undemanding, shared, relaxing experience,” said Sadie.

“Children who had been on edge were captured by the music, and suddenly families were no longer worrying.  They were all enjoying the experience.”

Carole Crowe, Community Fundraising Manager for Acorns for the Three Counties, said:  “Acorns cares for more than 200 local children who have life limiting or life threatening conditions and families, including those that are bereaved.  There is no charge to families for using the services but it does cost £750 per day for each child’s care.

“Acorns urgently needs donations, on which it relies for the majority of its income.  The support of the Elgar Chorale Concert for Hope, is deeply appreciated by Acorns families.”

Chorale chairman Michael Latham adds: 'The concert will contain some well-known classical music which should certainly send the audience home with a smile on their face.

“ The performers include local orchestral players, and the much-admired young organist Lee Dunleavy, who is the director of music at All Saint's Church, Northampton.

“The audience is assured of a top-notch evening of music making in support of our much loved and respected local Children's Hospice”.

The event, conducted by David Brookshaw, is due to take place on March 10 in St George’s RC Church, Worcester, at 8pm.

Other music includes Bruckner’s Four Motets and Great is the Lord, by Elgar. Tickets cost £10 (£5 student concessions) and are available on 01684 594570 or on the door.
