“United in Song”
A Choral Celebration !
The award winning children’s choir The Major Minors and the well-known Hutt Valley Singers, will join forces for a very special occasion:
To celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Hutt Valley Singers!
The Hutt Valley Singers is an Upper Hutt based community mixed voice choir and can trace its origins back to 1933 when the “Upper Hutt Home and School Association Male Voice Choir” was formed and held its first concert in December that year under the baton of Mr Josland.
Quite a few changes have happened over the years with its membership, ladies came onto the scene in a more permanent way after WWII, and the choir’s name saw several transformations culminating in the present day name of “Hutt Valley Singers”.
The Major Minors Children Choir was formed last year with ages ranging from 4 to 14 and has been very successful in competitions and concerts.
Both choirs have Joanne Roelofs as their very dedicated and passionate musical director with the help of their equally passionate pianist Karen Boyce.
The upcoming concerts will be joyous and happy occasions with a wide variety of songs ranging from classical music like Beethoven’s Creation Hymn, which was also sang 80 years ago in the first concert of the choir, to modern musical/pop songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Barry Manilow and of course a lot more great songs from composers/songwriters like Douglas Mews, Alan Menken/Stephen Schwartz, Keith Hampton, Bob Chilcott, Edward German, Duke Ellington and of course Paul Halley whose song “United in Song” was the inspiration for our concert title.
