Two Choirs Nominated for Community Awards- Arts and Culture

  • The Hutt Valley Singers and The Major Minors Children's Choir have both been nominated as finalists (Arts & Culture) Upper Hutt in the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.

For me, personally, this is a thrill as I accompany both choirs. The Major Minors Choir won the category last year so to be nominated for a second year is a wonderful.

Wellington Airport, in partnership with Wellington Community Trust, and the five local councils have joined together to recognise the work carried out by community groups in the wider Wellington region. The focus of the Awards is to reward the valuable contribution made by volunteers.

Key factors considered during judging are:

    • Volunteer input
    • Utilisation of resources
    • Innovation and creativity
    • Effectiveness of activities
    • Impact within the community. With a focus on acitivites during the past year.

The Hutt Valley Singers have performed considerably at events to do with the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli (WW1). Including leading the singing at the Upper Hutt Dawn Parade. Other performances include The Armed Man this year and last year a successful fundraiser for the local foodbank.

The Major Minors have performed at the Spring Festival, International Children's Day, Carols at the Mall to name a few.

Both choir's numbers and sound are growing and developing and their connections to the community are becoming stronger.

I wish both choirs every success for their nominations- but more than anything am thrilled that their work and input into the community is being recognised. Great to see community groups being recognised in New Zealand- and even more so to see they are truely valued!
