Singing To Your Dog: All The Reasons Why You Should Sing To Your Pet

  • The Covid-19 pandemic has caused worldwide cancellations of mass gatherings, including concerts, choral competitions, and performances as a way to prevent the further spread of the virus. As a result, artists have turned to technology as a way to perform again, with big acts such as Josh Groban, BTS, Pearl Jam, and the National Symphony Orchestra performing live in online concerts that have been streamed all over the world. To make the most out of the current situation, some choirs have even organized online singing sessions on video chatting apps such as Zoom so they can practice without disobeying social distancing rules.

Meanwhile, others who have been stuck at home have begun to sing to family members and even pets to cope with boredom and isolation. If you’ve got a dog and you’ve never tried singing to your pet before, don’t worry—it’s not as weird as it sounds. In fact, it can be beneficial both for you and your furry friend. Here are all the reasons why you should sing to your dog.

    It can relieve stress

Working out with your pet is a great way to stay physically and mentally healthy as going for a hike or a run with your pooch can keep you fit and relieve stress. But if you want to try another way to decompress, try singing to your pet. It’s been scientifically proven that engaging in artistic pursuits, such as singing, can reduce anxiety and tension in people, but studies have also shown that music can relieve stress in dogs. Research has revealed that dogs who live in animal shelters bark less and have lower stress levels when they listen to music. Moreover, they are able to get better sleep despite being in a stressful environment. Try singing to your dog in a soft and gentle manner, and you may find that they’ll be less anxious and are able to sleep better because of the pleasant sound of your voice.

    It can alleviate pain

Some pooches are at risk of developing chronic pain, and it’s estimated to occur in nearly 50 percent of dogs. Medication and exercise can alleviate pain in dogs, but music therapy can also help to reduce pain in pets. This is the reason why classical music is often played in veterinarians’ offices and pet stores as it can help dogs to feel more comfortable and at ease. Music can also ease a dog’s fears and helps them to stay calm, so the next time there’s a thunderstorm, try singing to your dog to comfort and reassure them.

What songs should you sing to your dog?

Research has shown that dogs prefer reggae, soft rock, and classical music over other genres. If you’d like to try singing a bit of reggae to your pet, try Bob Marley’s “Trench Town Rock” or “No Woman No Cry.” If your voice is more suited to soft rock, try singing the classics such as The Beegees' “How Deep Is Your Love,” Air Supply’s “All Out Of Love,” or for a more modern take on soft rock, Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are.” You may also want to play some classical music for your pets or sing them children’s songs and lullabies. You may even try singing soothing songs such as “Fly Me To The Moon,” “Moon River,” or “I Wish You Love,” which is an English translation of the popular French song “Que reste-t-il de nos amours.”

Singing to your dog is a great way to bond with your pet. It’s also a holistic way for both of you to stay calm and heal during challenging times. Try singing different tunes to see what songs your dog will like the most, and your furry friend might just become your biggest fan.
