[A version of this article first appeared as a post on my blog From the Front of the Choir]
I wrote a post a a few years back called Do you need singing lessons in order to sing?
My main point was that many people are frightened to sing in public before they’ve had ‘training’ or ‘proper’ singing lessons. But can’t you just sing without any ‘technique’?
As you know, I believe that everyone can sing. You just open your mouth and the sound comes out. It’s easy.
Of course, it takes a little while to be able to sing in tune (see How do I know if I’m singing in tune? and Are you tone deaf? Very unlikely!), balance your voice with others (see Singing in harmony – small group skills), find your sweet spots (see But I can’t sing that high!) , hold a harmony part (see Singing in harmony – how do they do that?), express yourself freely, control the volume and quality of your voice, etc.
But that soon comes with practice (see Putting the hours in – are singers born or made?).
A colleague of mine, Katja Maria Slotte, of completevocalcoach.com once said:
Basically: “if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it”.
