This is a blog post with a difference. I want to start a discussion using the comments facility.
Yesterday there was a veritable Twitter storm when I posed the question:
"What do you think is the main reason more men don't sing in choirs?"
using the hashtag #getmensinging. If you want to join in, you can find me here: Twitter.com/ChrisRowbury
Also, a while back I sent an email out to everyone on my mailing list asking advice on how to get more men singing.
You can read the comments here:
Now I want to invite suggestions from you lovely readers out there.
Why do you think more men don’t sing?
How can we attract more men to singing workshops and choirs?
How can we get more young men interested in singing?
Is it uncool, not macho enough, too non-competitive?
This is not the first time I’ve tackled this problem (see Where are all the male singers and The problem with men: getting them, handling them, keeping them), but I’d like to get some different takes on the issue.
Let me know what you think by leaving a comment and I’ll try and keep the discussion going. Even if you’ve never left a comment before, now’s the time to join in the debate. Let’s tap into all that collective wisdom and experience out there!
I'll gather all your responses into a future blog post.
I'm also on the committee of the Natural Voice Practitioners' Network and we plan to set up a men's subgroup to look at this (also why only 10% of our membership is men) possibly leading to a national seminar.
Do let me know what you think. I'd love to hear from you!
