İnci Tığlı Ayağ. Since its foundation, Alegria Chamber Choir has been performing under the guidance of conductor İnci Tığlı Ayağ and assistant conductor Gözde Saatçioğlu. Between 2002 and 2008, Alegria Chamber Choir performed under the scope of Ankara Çoksesli Müzik Derneği (Ankara Polyphonic Music Association), a prestigious association which was founded in 1974. Since 2008, the choir has been extending his repertoire and performing fully independently as a non-profit and non-governmental organization.
The purpose of Alegria is to introduce to large audiences the world’s choir repertoire from different periods and regions. Alegria has now about 30 members divided into four voices and performs music dating from the Renaissance to Contemporary in all styles such as sacred and folk. Along with the polyphonic arrangements of Turkish musical pieces, many songs in various languages have found their place in Algeria’s extensive repertoire.
The vision of Alegria in Turkey is to reach a wide spectrum of music-lovers. In Turkey, it aims to introduce the not-before-performed polyphonic works of art to music enthusiasts, and educate the people in underdeveloped regions of Turkey, where exposure to polyphonic music has been very limited. Internationally, its vision can be summarized as introducing and representing Turkey and the Turkish culture to the world, and establishing strong and long-term partnerships with organizations in the European Union for healthy and fruitful cultural exchange.
Under İnci Tığlı’s conductance, Alegria attended many concerts and performed in many festivals in various parts of Turkey, and abroad such as in Italy (Sardinia Island Nouro Concerts Series) and in Macedonia (Ohrid Choir Festival). Alegria has also taken part in the “Voice of Anatolia” project, in which polyphonic arrangements of folkloric music from a diverse set of regions in Turkey were performed in the company of an orchestra, the Voice of the Bosphorus Music Ensemble (Boğazın Sesi Müzik Topluluğu), which consists of classical western and ethnical oriental musical instruments. Additionally, the choir has shared the stage with Maliye Theatre, a non-governmental organization, and aimed to convey to the Turkish audience that polyphonic music could be used effectively and artistically in the art of theatre.
Most recently, Alegria has been staging a project named ‘Anatolia: Tones, Ballads, and Stories’, a project that highlights the folkloric inheritance of Turkey with its music and dances. An aspiration of Alegria is to broaden the scope of this project by expanding via the inclusion of choirs and dance groups from other countries.
Some of the festivals and competitions that Alegria took part up to today may be listed as follows:
• Altı Nokta Körler Derneği (Alti Nokta Association for the Blind) Choir Festival,
