The choristers looked at the formation of the choir as further development to their shared roots from singing with the Limburg Cathedral Boys Choir. They also looked to continue the tradition of successful male chamber choirs founded by former members of Limburg Cathedral Boys Choir, which is unique in Germany.
The ensemble has committed itself to presenting the audience with unfamiliar male choir works of the highest level, but without neglecting the traditional canon of compositions, which makes for a exceptional combination. The repertoire includes a range of the following: Gregorian chants, works of old masters, romantic motets, contemporary compositions, arrangements of jazz and pop songs. The intensive study of new choral music results in numerous compositions that have been written for Camerata Musica Limburg, by composers such as Robert Sund, Kurt Bikkembergs, Walter Steffens, Alessandro Cadario and Bob Chilcott.
In 2004 Camerata Musica Limburg won the title of “Best Classical Choir of the Year”, awarded by Hessian Broadcasting. The ensemble received first prize in France at the renowned “Tours Vocal Competition Florilège Vocal” in 2006. Again in 2007 the ensemble took home first prize at the International Choir Contest in Vlaanderen Maasmechelen, Belgium. The choir was also awarded a special prize for its outstanding interpretation of the contemporary compulsory work. At the Choir Festival Contest in Bremen in May 2008, the choristers won first prize in the categories “Romanticism A” and “Modernity A”, furthermore, they were awarded the choir festival's special prize by DeutschlandradioKultur. At the German National Choir Contest 2010 in Dortmund, Camerata Musica Limburg was awarded the first prize in its category with distinction.
Thanks to the ensemble’s excellent reputation, it has been invited to festivals and concerts all over Europe and the world, including the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and Hohenems, Movimentos and the Mozarteum Argentino. In 2011 Camerata Musica Limburg was invited to be a guest choir in the 9th World Symposium of Choral Music in Puerto Madyrn, Argentina. In 2013 Camerata Musica Limburg attended the American Choral Director’s Association National Conference in Dallas as a guest choir.
The choir has a growing discography, which was inaugurated with the 2008 recording “Schöne Nacht”, a CD of romantic partsongs. Then followed the recording “Von dem Dome” (2009) with the complete sacred works for male choir by Schubert, Mendelssohn and Cornelius, “Serenade” (2012) with romantic partsongs by Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Alfvén and Bruckner, “Die Macht des Gesanges” (2012), the world-premiere recording of works by Styrian composer Anselm Huettenbrenner and “Am siebenten Tage” (2013) with contemporary compositions by flemish composers.
Camerata Musica Limburg is supported by Deutschlandradio Kultur since 2008.
