The objective was to bring about musical performances (of choral works by foreign and Nigerian composers) of sufficiently high standard for international consumption, within the limitations of national resources.
The CHORALE which has grown in size to over 100 singers has given numerous concerts in Lagos and other towns in Nigeria, including Aba, Abakaliki, Abeokuta, Abuja, Benin, Calabar, Eket, Enugu, Ibadan, Ife, Nsit Atai, Oko, Owerri, Port Harcourt, Umuahia and Uyo. It has performed many times on Radio and Television and has featured on many State, National and International functions. It was the nucleus of the Nigerian National Choir for FESTAC 77. In November 2003, the group featured at the opening ceremonies of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Abuja, and the recent Nigerian centenary celebration – Abuja on February 27, 2014. The CHORALE was the nucleus of the larger choir that performed at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of 8th All Africa Games -- COJA 2003.
In September-October 1982, the CHORALE was the only choir from Africa which participated in the 5th International Choral Festival of the Choruses of the World, Inc. in the United States of America, during which time the CHORALE successfully undertook a one-month tour of some parts of the United States.
The CHORALE's general repertoire includes 16th Century Masses, Motets, and Madrigals; Christmas Carols of various periods and nationalities; unaccompanied choral music of all periods from the 15th Century to the present day; folk songs of various nationalities; "Negro" Spirituals arranged by American and African composers; African folk songs, and Nigerian folk songs from all over the country.
Over the years the CHORALE has grown in number and in reputation and has become a bench mark for good choral music making in this part of the world as it is reckoned to be one of the best if not the very best and most sophisticated choral group in Nigeria.
