Since its formation in 1964, the choir appears annually at the Welsh Proms and has performed with many of the world’s leading conductors, orchestras and soloists including: Sir Colin Davies; Sir Andrew Davies; Tadaaki Otaka; Owain Arwel Hughes; The London Symphony Orchestra; BBC National Orchestra of Wales; The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; Raphael Wallfisch, Luciano Pavarotti; Dame Kiri Te Kanawa; Felicity Lott and Bryn Terfel. We have also sung for both the Queen and Nelson Mandela.
The choir’s versatility has led to countless recordings and broadcasts on both Radio and Television, most recently on BBC Radio 4. Commissioning of new works remains high on the choir’s artistic agenda alongside an active tradition of promoting the work of Welsh composers, notably that of William Mathias, Alun Hoddinott, Geraint Lewis, John Metcalf & Mervyn Burtch. The choir has toured extensively throughout Europe and the Americas. Recent visits have included Prague 2005 [to mark the retirement of celebrated former conductor Helena Braithwaite MBE, now Conductor Emeritus], Spain at Easter 2007, Venice 2009 [including Singing Mass on Easter Monday at St Mark’s Basilica], Guest choir at the International Celtic Festival, August 2009. One of the tour highlights in the history of the choir has to be performing mass on Easter Monday at the high altar in St Peters Basilica,Vatican City in April 2011 - hard to top that!
The choir’s Musical Director, David Leggett, enjoys a busy career as both an educator and advisor as well as Choral Director.
The choir’s accompanist, Janice Ball, has performed as a soloist and accompanist at prestigious venues worldwide and is well known for her dynamic yet sensitive playing.
Alongside Janice, David continues to champion the choir’s mission of performance excellence and innovative programming of contemporary music.
In 2014, we will be celebrating 50 years of Cardiff Ardwyn Singers.....here's to another half a century! less
