Romulo as President of the University of the Philippines. Through its 50 years of existence, the group has metamorphosed from being a simple university chorale into a musical force of national and world stature.
Aside from its undeniable musical prowess and versatility in performing classical, Filipino folk, pop, and Broadway genres—all with ease, the Concert Chorus is also recognized as the pioneer of choreographed song for a choir. This innovation was started by the late Dean Reynaldo T. Paguio in 1969, and flourished under top choreographers like Edru Abraham, Gener Caringal, Tony Fabella, Edna Vida, Sonia Domingo, Steve Villaruz, Rene Hofileña, Ianne Damian, Paul Morales, Allan Samonte, and Ernest Hojilla, to name a few. With current artistic and musical director Prof. Janet Sabas-Aracama, the UP Concert Chorus goes beyond the typical choir performance style through choral art forms called "ChoreoCapella" (choreographed a cappella) and "Choreographed Chorale" (choral works inspired by musical theater concert style).
As an entity of national acclaim, the UP Concert Chorus prides itself for having been recognized by top award-giving bodies in the Philippines. Its most recent distinction in the local scene is the Hall of Fame accolade, given by the Aliw Awards—an award-giving body that positions itself as the only recognized award-giving body for live entertainment in the country, for consecutively bagging the “Best Choral Group” Award for three years and the “Best Cultural Group” Award for two years.
Currently on its 20th international concert tour, the UP Concert Chorus has contributed immensely to promoting Filipino culture and heritage internationally. Korus has also garnered major international competition awards in different choral categories, such as folk song and mixed a cappella singing. In the international setting, the Korus most recently garnered Second Prize in the Mixed Category and First Prize in the Folk Category of the Festival Internacional de Musica de Cantonigros, which was held in Vic, Catalunya from July 19-22, 2012. They were also given a Gold diploma for their outstanding performance in the 9th Cantemus International Choral Festival in Hungary, as well as the Folklore Audience Prize at the same festival's Folklore Night.
Under the continuing leadership of Conductor and Artistic Director Prof. Janet Sabas-Aracama, supported by UPCC President and Assistant Conductor Emmanuel P. de Leon, Jr., the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus continues to plant cultural seed and friendship across the globe. On its 50th year of being cultural envoys of Filipino artistry in music, Korus proves that it is not just a crowd of university students who want to take the stage, but a group with a burning passion to unite audiences of various cultural backgrounds through the gift of music. Reaching its golden year, Korus has done more than just showcase exceptional talents; it has created generations of Filipino artists with the mission to serenade the world with the music they create—all for the love of the choral arts, for the university’s honor, for love of country and most of all, for the glory of God.
