Ljubljanski madrigalisti mixed chamber choir is a renowned and successful Slovenian vocal ensemble, founded in 1991. In 2003, Matjaž Šček, the conductor of the group, was replaced by Andreja Martinjak, who performed regularly with the choir and took part in national and international choir competitions where the choir as well as the conductor were winning numerous prizes and awards. The greatest achievements of the choir include a gold plaque, awarded in the 20th Slovenian national choir competition, Naša pesem (Our song) 2007 and the second place in the 9th international choir competition in Maribor 2008, where the choir also won a special prize for the best Slovenian choir of the competition. In 2008 we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the birth of Slovenian composer Pavle Merkú with a special cycle of concerts. We also performed the fairy folk-tale by Robert Schumman, Der Rose Pilgerfahrt (The Pilgrimage of the Rose) – an oratorio.
The programme of Ljubljanski madrigalisti mixed chamber choir includes all sorts and periods of choral music: it re-creates authentic Slovenian choir songs as well as songs from the world treasury of vocal music; the Renaissance and modern music. The latter is, among other things, the reason for the invitation by Society of Slovene Composers for Ljubljanski madrigalisti choir to premiere Slovenian choral novelties within Slovenian Music Days 2009. A special project of the choir in 2008 was cooperation with internationally renowned duo Silence at the first award of Igor Zabel prize for theory and culture at Cankarjev dom Cultural and Congress Centre and a charity concert at the Institute of Oncology.
The choir mainly performs a cappella; however, it also cooperates in larger vocal groups and in performances of vocal-instrumental works with the RTV Slovenia Symphonic Orchestra. One of such projects in 2008 was cooperation in the performance of Requiem, composed by Avgust Ipavec, in St. Stephen’s cathedral in Vienna, which was the composer’s memorial of the 90th anniversary of the First World War. In autumn 2008, we performed on the anniversary of Primož Trubar under the conductor Mirko Ferlan across Slovenia and in countries across the border, with an authorial project of Slovenian protestant music.
A kind of recognition to the choir is also an invitation to take part on the 5th international competition of young choir conductors which took place in March 2009 in Ljubljana. The competition meant a special challenge to the choir and at the same time exceeded the expectations of the organizers. In this way, the choir proved again that it was one of the best Slovenian vocal groups. In the season 2009, the choir took part in an international choral competition in Spittal in Austria and it concluded its cooperation with the conductor Andreja Martinjak with a cycle “On a trip with folk music”. That was an educational programme for young people which connected folk singing with choral arrangements of folk songs. We completed the re-creation of folk legends also with picture and spoken words; we included customs, national costumes, dances and dialects. In autumn, we took part in the seminar of Peter Hanke as a demonstration choir.
In the beginning of 2010, the choir got a new conductor, Mateja Kališnik. Our first common project was the recording of a CD called Eucharistic Heart with the tenor friar Vid and the soprano Pia Brodnik, which is already our 8th CD.
Beside regular performances in choral festivals, national performances and different other opportunities we co-organised a seminar for conductors with Ragnar Rasmussen and took part in it as a demonstration choir. In November 2010 we took part in the 20th choral competition in Advent and Christmas carols in Prague and returned home with a golden award and the prestigious Petr Eben award for the best performance of any piece by this Czech composer. This year, we are preparing ourselves for the 20th anniversary of the choir.
Ljubljanski madrigalisti mixed chamber choir is ambitious; we wish that our choral re-creation would bring new freshness and recognizable musicality into the choral singing. We invite new singers to join us all the time; namely, to be a member of Ljubljanski madrigalisti choir does not only mean singing in a good vocal group, but also learning how to sing and last, but not least, socializing.
