Today it comprises 23 selected singers, Cantilena meaning "lightweight song", deriving from the Latin word for "song" or "melody". Whenever possible, during concerts the members of the choir wear a pearl necklace to represent the significance of the activities pursued: each member of the choir is represented by one of the pearls, with the strand linking them all being the music - the main purpose of so much hard work to achieve artistic quality. As well as being an extremely feminine accessory, it also illustrates the quality, refinement, finish and musical beauty that the Academia Concerto pursues. The formation of groups of like voices in Brazil is not very common and, therefore, requires constant research to seek out specialised repertoire, both in Brazil and abroad, making appropriate arrangements or adaptations of pieces for mixed voices. Today the group's repertoire includes major classical composers such as Bach, Handel, Pergolesi, Mozart, Brahms, Faure and Villa-Lobos, in addition to a wide-ranging repertoire in relation to periods and styles: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary, with pieces in the classical, church, popular, folk, musical and negro spiritual styles. The arrangements that the choir sings are both a cappella (a term dating back to the first centuries of the history of music, in which voices were not accompanied by instruments, but sung as in church) and with instrumental accompaniment. Some concerts peformed: Festival of Church Music, Campinas, Festival Ars Mvsica Sacra, Sorocaba, Finamax Choir Festival, Formal Session of Sorocaba City Council in commemoration of Women's Week, “Israel and the Paths of Peace” Festival, 1st Festival of Female Choirs, in São Paulo and, most recently, Encanta Cruise - 1st Choir Festival at Sea - Guarani Theatre in Santos, Angra dos Reis and Grand Teatro Mirasierra on the ship Grand Celebration. Cantilena occasionally performs with the Camerata Vocal male choir, thus forming Academia Concerto's large mixed choir. less
