The music was devised to short call order for a Mothers' Union Deanery Service in what was then Leeds Parish Church on Lady Day - the Feast of the Annunciation - in March 1979. Its accompaniment owes much to the setting of Robert Herrick's 'Litany to the Holy Spirit' by Peter Hurford of some twenty years earlier. 'Ave Maria' has been extensively recorded and broadcast by Choirs of all traditions, especially children's Choirs. Eventually, a version of the piece for four-part Choir emerged during the early weeks of 2003 in response to a request from Gordon Stewart on behalf of the BBC Radio 4 Pilgrim Choir and it is this more recent version that is sung here.
This performance was recorded in Leeds Minster on Sunday 28th April 2013 during the recital of 'Music with Minster connections' sung by St Peter's Singers of Leeds, directed by the composer. The organist is David Houl... less

It was recorded on 5th December 2010 in the Harvey Nichols Espresso Bar in Leeds' magnificent Victoria Quarter in the first of St Peter's Singers' now-traditional Sunday evening carol performances there.
The Choir is directed by Dr Simon Lindley, its Music Director since the Singers' formation in June 1977.

HomeChoir is a new way of looking at learning music. You don’t need to be able to sing well or at all to take part – the teaching is one-way. You watch and sing along with Ben if you can, and are invited to take part in the live text chat with everyone else around the world. There is a vibrant and friendly social community among the Choir.
If you can’t join in live, then you can enjoy the music-making at any time as all our sessions are recorded and available for you to watch when you can, as often as you like.
You don’t need to be able to read music, and where scores are needed, Ben will display them on screen to help you learn. As well as traditional Choir and classical pieces, Ben teaches a huge range of other songs including folk, sea shanti... less

The Choir, which began at Brigham Young University as an early music ensemble, transformed into one of the premier non-collegiate chamber groups in the Western United States.
This award-winning ensemble achieves high performance standards by drawing on the rich musical heritage of the region. Many Cantorum singers have solo careers and all have sung with top collegiate ensembles. A number have also sung as members of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Utah Chamber Artists, and Salt Lake Vocal Artists. In addition, Cantorum is proud to have a high representation of talented choral educators.
The group won both of its categories at the 2016 Interkultur competition and received special commendation for their performance of Dale Warland and Hugo Distler.
Cantorum is under the direction of Steven Durtschi, a graduate of Brigham Young University and Utah State University.
