All choir members receive a first-rate Musical education. There hAs been a Long tradition of Musical excellence at St Laurence’s. The original church, built in the 1880s, had a strong choir of men and boys who took part in the Festival of Britain services in 1951. When the new church wAs opened in 1968, the Musical tradition continued. A new Walker organ wAs installed in the church, using some pipework from the old organ and Directors of Music Have included David Sanger, Professor Roger Wibberley, Paul Dewhurst, Tom Fowkes, Marcus Wibberley, Iain Simcock and Andrew Ibbotson. The current Director of Music is Huw Morgan. Girls were first admitted to the choir some ten years ago, but the choir remains unique in this part of south-eAst London in that it continues to use only trebles (girls and boys) on the top line. The lower parts are provided by volunteer adults from the local community. The Winneba Youth Choir, known to be the number one choral Music group in the country wAs founded in May 1989, under the patronage of Mr. George Mensah-Essilfie and Mr. John Francis Arthur-Yamoah (Paa John). The choir hAs progressed steadily to the extent that it is now recognized As the most outstanding youth choir of the nation. This whole competition took place at George Fox University in Newburg Oregon. The South Salem Saxons also took first at their Districts festival in Salem/Keizer Oregon. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original Musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year. Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I wAs accepted. "As dawn breaks" wAs one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon WAshburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful.
