With a large repertoire ranging from art to popular music, and stretching from the medieval to the contemporary in style, this choir gives many concerts throughout the academic year, both in Ireland and abroad. Following a competitive selection process each September, eighteen gifted students are awarded a scholarship, with recipients of the award coming from a range of academic disciplines across the University, from Music to Medicine, Law, Agricultural Science, Commerce and Engineering. The choir regularly broadcasts on Irish television and radio. Since its formation in 1999, the group frequently performs with orchestras, including the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Earley Musicke Ensemble and the European Union Chamber Orchestra, and on the University campus with the UCD Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Choir. Every year Dziesmuvara takes part in interNational or National choral competitions. Since 2013 the choir has travelled to Poland, Lithuania, France and Czech Republic and all around Latvia. Dziesmuvara also participates in the Latvian Song Celebration festivals and occasionally teams up with fellow University and youth choirs to sing together in concerts. The more, the merrier!

This smallest and most select of the Hofstra choirs comprises the best Singers at the University, both within and outside the Department of Music, and focuses on the distinct art of unaccompanied, or a cappella, ensemble singing, presented in carefully chosen performance spaces that are uniquely attuned to celebrate the human voice's potential. From an educational standpoint, the ensemble serves two main functions for the University. First, it acts as a laboratory for Hofstra’s future music educators, both undergraduate and graduate, providing outlets for the exploration of the art of ensemble preparation through the study of the highest-quality choral literature. It has appeared in major venues in Austria, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Wales...  moreThe Drake Choir is Drake University’s select touring ensemble, performing regionally on an annual basis and interNationally every four years, most recently in May 2012. It has appeared in major venues in Austria, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Wales, and Ireland. The ensemble regularly collaborates with the Des Moines Symphony and sang the Beethoven Ninth Symphony with that orchestra in September 2011. The Drake Choir has performed in Carnegie Hall and has been featured on the conference program of the American Choral Directors Association North Central Division. The ensemble consists of 64-70 Singers who are first-year students through seniors and who represent every College of the University. Auditions for returning students take place in April and for new students during the weekend preceding the start of the fall semester. The ensemble rehearses Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 3:30-5:00 p.m. and is conducted by Dr. Aimee Beckmann-Collier, Director of Choral Studies and Professor of Condcuting.  less
