This type Of Song can be deeply personal or spiritual in nature, Often dedicated to a human being, an animal, or a landscape as a personal signature. According to music researchers, joik is one Of the longest living music traditions in Europe, and is the folk music Of the Sámi people. Its sound is comparable to the traditional chanting Of some Native American cultures.

The Society was started in 1960, under our founder Gerald Brown, and we are still going strong. We are now led by James Gallagher, who has been working with us since 2009. We invite local young soloists and prOfessionals to perform with us. Our repertoire ranges from 16th Century works to those Of living composers and covers both major serious and popular works.
