Ubi Caritas
Paul Mealor (b. 1975)
Modern Classical
Welsh composer Paul Mealor originally wrote this piece as the first movement of his Rose Cycle with title and text 'Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal'. His refashioned version with the famous Latin text Ubi caritas et amor was commissioned by Prince William and premiered by the choirs of Westminster Abbey and Her Majesty's Chapel Royal, conducted by James O'Donnell, at the Royal Wedding of His Royal Highness Prince William of Wales with Miss Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey in April 2011. Mealor uses a combination of a plainchant style and misleading harmonic suspensions similar to those of Eric Whitacre or Morten Lauridsen. Mealor's setting of Ubi caritas is reminiscent of the original Gregorian antiphon melody - ... less

Composed as the theme song for the video game Civilization IV and featured on Tin's album Calling All Dawns, Baba Yetu was the first piece of music composed for a video game to win a Grammy Award. Originally composed for full orchestra, choir and soloists, it was rearranged for SATB a capella choir by Tin in 2011. The text is a translation of the Lord's Prayer in Swahili.
Baba yetu, Yetu uliye
Mbinguni yetu, Yetu amina!
Baba yetu, Yteu uliye
Jina lako litukuzwe
Utupe leo chakula chetu
Tunachohitaji utusamehe
Makosa yetu, hey!
Kama nasi tunavyowasamehe
Waliotukosea usitutie
Katika majaribu, lakini
Utuokoe, na yule, muovu e milele!

Calon Lân
John Hughes (1873-1932)
Hymn
John Hughes was a Welsh Composer and deacon at Salem Welsh Baptist Chapel who wrote the well-known hymn Cwm Rhondda, the tune for which is also used in the popular English hymn Guide me, O thou great redeemer. Calon Lân is a Welsh hymn that is sung at most rugby matches involving the Welsh national team.
Nid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus,
Aur y byd na'i berlau mân:
Gofyn wyf am galon hapus,
Calon onest, calon lân.
I don't ask for a luxurious life,
the world's gold or its fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.
Chorus:
Calon lân yn llawn daioni,
Tecach yw na'r lili dlos:
Dim ond calon lân all ganu
Canu'r dydd a chanu'r nos.
A pure heart full of goodness,
Is fairer than the pretty lily:

Ave Verum Corpus
William Byrd (1540-1623)
Renaissance Motet
An English composer of the Renaissance period, William Byrd was a student of Thomas Tallis and wrote many works both sacred and secular in the common forms in England at the time. Byrd's Ave Verum Corpus appeared in his Gradualia, two volumes of liturgical polyphony published in 1605 and 1607. Primarily devoted to use within the major feasts of the church calendar, some of the included items in the 1605 volume do not belong to the main sphere of works. The Ave Verum Corpus is one of these. It is a popular work of Byrd's, utilising the well-known Latin text of the Eucharistic hymn.
