The choir was founded in 1936 under the baton of William Morris. After him various conductors established the ensemble as an influential South African choir: Gawie Cillié (1940 - 1954) Philip McLachlan (1955 - 1976) Johan de Villiers (1977 - 1984) Acáma Fick (1985 - 1992) Sonja van der Walt (1993 - 2002) andré van der Merwe (2003 - ) The choir comprises of students from various academic courses and generally only a few members study music. The choir, an ensemble of approximately 80 – 100 voices, has won international acclaim through performances, concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions. The choir is currently ranked 1st on the Interkultur World Ranking List for amateur choirs. Being part of the choir requires two very important elements - dedication and commitment - and it is evident that, over the years, these have remained at the core of the choir, demonstrating the loyalty of the choir members not only to each other but to keeping the talent of choral singing alive and well! Excellent performances just don't happen and a lot of hard work and effort is put in at every rehearsal, however, the camaraderie, enjoyed by everyone, is also a very special part of being a choir Member. In 2005 the local Council of the borough of North Down conferred the status of Borough Ambassador on Bangor Ladies choir. This is the first conferment ever to an external organisation outside of the Council Membership and the choir were privileged and proud to accept this unique position. Since its foundation, the choir is in continuous improvement and has been involved in many workshops with Prof.Mustafa Apaydın which were organized twice a year. The choir has a mixed membership including music teachers, musicians and amateur choir singers. The choir’s name is inspired by the famous story written by William Shakespeare and Guiseppe Verdi’s famous opera called Othello and the Othello Castle which is located in the city of Famagusta. The city where the choir is based is known as “Othello’s City Famagusta” all around the world. In the last six years since its formation, the Othello choir has given many concerts in Cyprus and also hosted festivals and choir workshops.
