The New Choir is an auditioned Chamber Choir performing choral works from all genres. The Choir has been conducting regularly scheduled performances in the Bay Area since its founding. The members of the New Choir have been brought together by their common love for the making of beautiful music. The New Choir is dedicated to the study and performance of quality choral literature and sharing the joy and the spiritual enhancement inherent in the making of music. The New Choir has been recognized for their performances of thoughtfully prepared programs. In 1985 the Choir became an Oakham House society open to Ryerson students, faculty and...  moreThe Choir was founded in 1984 as a result of the efforts of Marie Dowler of Ryerson's English department and became a success under the direction of Matthew Jaskiewicz. In 1985 the Choir became an Oakham House society open to Ryerson students, faculty and staff. In 1987 membership was opened to the general public. The Choir is currently made up of Ryerson undergraduates and alumni, current and retired faculty members and people from all ages and walks of life in the community. It ranges in size from 60-80 members. A core of long term members makes it possible to maintain high standards and perform a demanding repertoire. Under Matthew's direction, the Choir has performed over 50 concerts and on several occasions performed at Ryerson graduation ceremonies. In 1986 the Choir competed in three categories at the Kiwanis Festival, winning first place in two categories and receiving high marks in all three. We ...  moreThe Island Consort Chamber Choir is a 20-voice community Chamber Choir that first appeared in concert in late April 2007. Its repertoire is varied and loosely “classical”, focusing on sacred and secular music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. We rehearse Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30. This is an auditioned group with considerable musical and choral experience, one that aspires to a higher standard of performance. Our members include amateur and professional musicians, Choir directors and music educators. Prospective members may audition from time to time as positions come open. Contact the Choir if you have an interest in joining. We perform mostly a cappella pieces, but many of our concerts include accompaniment by members of the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and organ.  less
