The Choir, which has a membership of around 30 voices, was formed in 2007 by its Musical Director, Sheila Farmer. A Cappella is a touring Choir, having visited Prague and France, and hoping to make a tour to Spain in the near future. The Choir rehearses every other Saturday morning, between 10 a.m. and noon.

Founded as a male Choir in 1900, it became a Mixed Choir in 1907. The Choir was conducted for more than four decades by its founder, the renowned Choir conductor and composer Heikki Klemetti. The current artistic director, Esko Kallio (b. 1974), has conducted Suomen Laulu since 2002. The Choir's repertoire consists both a cappella works and compositions works for Choir and orchestra. Since 1921 the Choir has maintained the tradition of performing the St. Matthew Passion by J.S.Bach every Maundy Thursday in St. John's Church in Helsinki. Suomen Laulu has made five recordings, the most recent of which was published to celebrate Choir's centenary in 2000. The Choir also has its own series of publications, the "Suomen Laulun ohjelmistoa", which contains several of the finest pieces of Finnish choral Music.  less

Bishop Road Community Choir is open to all in the local community. We are a Mixed, non-audition Choir. All songs are taught by ear and we don’t expect anyone to learn the words off by heart. However, Music can be made available for those who want it. W...  moreBishop Road Community Choir is open to all in the local community. We are a Mixed, non-audition Choir. All songs are taught by ear and we don’t expect anyone to learn the words off by heart. However, Music can be made available for those who want it. We sing a range of different songs, including pop, gospel, world Music and classical. We mainly sing songs with piano accompaniment, provided by our famous pianist, Geoff. We hold our own annual concert, and we are often invited to sing at other local events such as the local MayFest. Our members come along for “enjoyment, friendship and satisfaction as well as singing with a group of like-minded people”. Singing is reputed to release endorphins in the brain, and we’ve certainly noticed amongst us a sense of well-being following rehearsals and in particular, concerts. We are a very sociable bunch and often meet for a drink at the Chimp House on Gloucester Road following our rehearsal on Thursday evenings.
