As a result of the love they had for choir music, they felt a need for a School choir to be established. From the first year of its existence, choir was trained and prepared for the Schools’ eisteddfods by two fellow students. In 1998, they both matriculated. In the following year these students continued with the choir training and were compensated for their services by the School Governing Body (SGB). In 2001 they were snatched by nearby Schools that were willing to pay them better wages and the SGB had to look for other people who could assist with choir training from the Community. This continued until 2004, when the School employed a teacher who studied music at university. In 2009 another teacher, who studied music too, came and volunteered his services at the School. Every year Dziesmuvara takes part in international or national Choral competitions. Since 2013 the choir has travelled to Poland, Lithuania, France and Czech Republic and all around Latvia. Dziesmuvara also participates in the Latvian Song Celebration festivals and occasionally teams up with fellow university and youth choirs to sing together in Concerts. The more, the merrier!

The choir sings mainly a capella, with an emphasis on current music, and integrates improvisation, drumming, and movement. Udiana has been supported by the Ministry for Culture and Sport since 2012. We aim to express processes in human development, so we build our programs around subjects that we research from different angles, including “Prayer”, “Song of the Earth”, “Peace”, and “Water”. In 2016 we created a program called “Silence” in collaboration with the Israeli Brass Quintet. In 2017 the subject was “My Soul Returns to the Fire”, where we explored the quality of fire in our lives.
