The group meets regularly in the Birnam Arts Centre in the village of Birnam, by Dunkeld, in Perthshire. Just Singin’ grew out of a nightclass which was offered from Early 2003 by Birnam Institute and led by folksinger, and trained voice teacher, Christine Kydd. With Christine still a very big part of our culture, Just Singin’ is now a membership-based organisation and charity in its own right. Its programme of events and tutors is coordinated by an active volunteer committee and their work is complemented by a number of supportive group members. We have just released a CD called A Cup o' Kindness, made possible by funding from Griffin Wind Farms Community Fund. It is available on iTunes.  less

The group’s repertory is quite wide and eclectic and ranges from sacred and secular Early music to contemporary works. Besides singing some of the most important Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, by composers such as Victoria, Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi, Purcell, Handel and Bach, the group has also premiered several contemporary pieces and made first modern auditions of many Portuguese Renaissance and Baroque works. Christopher Bochmann, Ivan Moody, Bob Chilcott, Luis Tinoco, Eurico Carrapatoso and Vasco Mendonça are some of the composers who dedicated works to Grupo Vocal Olisipo. Grupo Vocal Olisipo attended several masterclasses led by some of the world leading vocal ensembles, such as The King's Singers and the Hilliard Ensemble and was coached in the performance of Baroque music by Jill Feldman. The text for the piece was written by Bartholomew Begley, a Dublin-based philosophy lecturer who works on philosophical translations of Early modern Latin texts. The text 'Deus Ex Machina' tells the story of a suddenly and unexpectedly found God 'out of a machine.' The setting of the choir was very experimental – the aim was to take full advantage of the possibilities offered by the spatial, immersive sound. The choir sections were spread horizontally and vertically; therefore, the entire space around the listener was arranged. The visuals indicate the positions of the choir by points of light, whose brightness and movement were devised based on the sound energy of each of the choral sections.  less
