In 1989 we began the great tradition of offering students a chance to deepen their exposure and understanding of the choral art through a year-long experience leading up to the celebratory Festival Day. We partner with selected High Schools for a year of fun and memorable musical experiences as choir students work collaboratively with their peers from around the Southland. The 2017 Festival culminated in a monumental performance at the awe-inspiring Walt Disney Concert Hall. Choir students from 29 Schools joined together to sing as a massive ensemble, experiencing the power of choral music under the direction of Grant Gershon, Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.  less

Under the direction of artistic director John William Trotter, the group spans a repertoire from Gregorian chant to the Beatles and beyond and is known for its performances of sacred works, vocal jazz and pop, folk and international music, as well as a special focus on music written in the present generation. Thompson. The 40-80 member A Cappella Choir offers freshman and sophomore Singers the opportunity to perform works for larger choirs and to fine-tune the art of choral singing through exposure to music from the Renaissance through the 21st century. In daily rehearsals, choir members hone musicianship skills such as rhythm, sight-reading and the understanding of complex scores. They develop an understanding of the intricacies of vocal production, including pitch and how to blend individual voices together into a unified, beautiful sound. Finally, members learn how to sing in an ensemble and to successfully meld as a team. The choir frequently performs with other School of Music ensembles, including the Utah Philharmonia orchestra, the Wind Ensemble, the Chamber Choir and Women’s Chorus.
