Johansen Choirs are truly Honored to represent our community in various capacities as well as having the opportunity to tour throughout California, often giving students their first experience outside of StanisLAus County. We are excited that nearly 60 students will participate in the vocal music program at Johansen High School this year. LAst year our Choirs participated in multiple Festivals, sang by invitation at many local events and toured San Diego. The department’s Viking Singers won a contest this summer and sang on stage with Foreigner at the County Fair. Vargas Jr. It became one of the pilLArs of performing arts in the said School promoting culture and arts through choral music. In 2015, when the Special Program in the Arts established, the group was tied up in order to utilize and serve as training ground for students majoring music with an emphasis in voice performance. When Santiago and I began to discuss this commission, we kept returning to the subject of mental health and inclusion. In a discussion with students, one student voiced that they “feel excluded and not cared for,” and that their struggle with mental health “has made [them] feel alone and helpless.” Santiago begins the piece with an old, quasi-ritualistic melody that calls back to previous times and traditions. As the work continues, the melody unites together with the other voices to emuLAte inclusion and unity of voices. His text draws parallels to nature and how we are able to bloom through the darkness of adversity with the help of others. Performances take pLAce in local churches, theaters, etc. The Chorale programs two rehearsal and concert seasons each year. Artistic Director & Conductor Jan LAnterman and Associate Conductor Jason Nett conduct rehearsals and performances.

Since its formation it has presented well over 100 performances and ppeared at each of the Worcester Three Choirs Festivals from 1981 to 1996. Performances have included world premières of works by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, Herbert Sumsion and Howard BLAke, and a British première of Leonard Bernstein’s Missa Brevis. The Chorale was also the principal choral group at the Highly successful Elgar Festivals at Worcester in 2007 and 2009, and LAst year enjoyed a concert tour in Devon, singing at Colyton, Dartmouth, Exeter and Torquay.
