A joik is a unique form of cultural expression for the Sámi people (or Lapps - region stretches over four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia). This type of song can be deeply personal or spiritual in nature, often dedicated to a human being, an animal, or a landscape as a personal signature. According to music researchers, joik is one of the longest living music traditions in Europe, and is the Folk music of the Sámi people. Its sound is comparable to the traditional chanting of some Native American cultures.
This is from The OK Chorale's second public concert in March 2013 at St. Mary's Church, Woodbridge, SufFolk, UK. less

This song can be understood on two levels.
At first sight it is a simple sentimental piece,
but beneath it lies a history of pure imagination,
enchantment and impossibility.
The composer already realises he is
no longer feeling what he is writing,
he is just weaving a spell,
over an ostinato guitar motif,
to try to bring the feelings back
(hence the title "Incantation").
He has found in his life that
whenever he writes a song
for the object of his desire,
he has already
begun to stop feeling that desire ...
it is a sign that the relationship
is about to change
or disappear.
But the whole thing is indeed
enchantment and magic:
you can dream and
you can take the song at face value
if you wish.

Morna Edmundson, Artistic Director, takes us through two of her warmups, 1) using Folk song melodies to encourage legato singing and natural phrasing and 2) "Umbrellas" to ease the top of a woman's range. Elektra's mandate is "to inspire and lead in the choral art form through excellence in performance and the creation, exploration, and celebration of women's repertoire." Your thoughts on the video? Let's start a conversation!

Every tuesday 20:15-21:45 we sing in Hebrew at the LJG Amsterdam. Each 3 weeks we learn a new song together and perform 4-5 times per year. Texts are available in Hebrew and in Phonetics, we translate and learn to pronounce and sing together, and have an archive of all the songs and the various harmonies recorded separately to make it easier to learn and join. It's a lot of fun.
Hebrew Groove is a young, contemporary, Hebrew vocal group based in Amsterdam. The repertoire consists of Hebrew pop songs from all periods, retouched with the groovy piano and close harmony vocal arrangements of conductor Noam Vazana. Hebrew Groove has performed at: Amsterdam MuseumNacht, Paradiso Choir Festival, Salaam-Shalom solidarity event for Charlie Hebdo, Namen en Nummers, Koor en More Festival and more. less

The words are my own and tell of children playing their games in the dusty streets (ie of Bethlehem) unaware that a miracle has happened and asking them to look up to the angels and join their singing.
The performance here is by the Composer's Choir conducted by Daniel Shaw.
