We rehearse at the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University, Victoria, Australia on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.
Our objectives are to rehearse and perform choral music, to participate in InterVarsity Choral Festivals and to do whatever else seems relevant.
The Society is a non-auditioned choir, but it has been suggested that we could have a small, auditioned group within the society (perhaps called "Graduate Singers" or such like). Another possibility is that we could sing at graduation ceremonies in Union Hall. Another possibility is a joint concert with another UCS. And what sort of music should we sing? Madrigals? Handel's Messiah?

1- Slavery
I come from Africa, the land of my father.
From the French, Hispanic and English ships,
I landed in the Americas, the unfamiliar land.
This is Haiti, this is my story.
I come from Africa with my strong religion,
With banbous, drums, with all my soul.
Right when I debarked, the villains muted me.
They swore a thousand times they would convert me.
They did all they could to make me lose my mind,
To forget my ancestors who are still in Africa.
Thus I cut the chords with words of Liberty,
Words of Equality, words of Dignity.
I spent three hundred years under the chains of slavery;
Night and day I struggled with work,
Carrying loads on my head, loads on my shoulders,
For others to rejoice in the metropolitan lands.

ABOUT THE PIECE:
Composer Vijay Singh writes: “The Lord's Prayer was inspired by Oliver Messian's choral masterpiece "O Sacrum Convivium", with its use of dense harmony, existentialism, hypnotic transcendental tonal treatment, and grateful piety.” The composer decided to use the universal "Lord's Prayer" text and various musical ideas to communicate the power and hope of this prayer. The piece builds to climax at "For Thine is the Power and Glory forever!" and ends reflectively, savoring the "Amen".
THE COMPOSER:
Composer Vijay Singh is Professor in the music department at Central Washington University. This video is from a concert presented on the CWU Campus.in May, 2014 entitled: “The CWU Choirs and Friends sing songs of Singh” In that concert, 28 of Singh’s pieces were performed by 6 choirs, including two invited guest high school choirs.

And the Wind
There is an awesome beauty found in sailing
Through black of night upon the open sea,
Your vessel mauled by unseen waves and trailing
Her phosphorescent wake, as steadily,
She plows into the darkness,
And the wind.

In mid-April, 2011, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus to join the choir in recording 3 of his pieces, (the teaser/trailer URL is found below)
This performance of Gjeilo's "Ubi Caritas" is from that session, following a rendition in which the composer joined the choir and improvised an accompaniment (URL below). In this video the choir sings the piece in its published (unaccompanied) version.
One behind-the-scenes comment: On the last page of the piece, when the first melodic material occurs again - Ola, who was sitting in the hall, asked half the choir to hum while the other half sang to create a more ethereal effect.
The CWU Chamber Choir also has recorded videos of the music of Monteverdi, Muehleisen, Singh, Victoria, and Rautavaara on YouTube
