In 1985 the choir became An Oakham House society Open to Ryerson students, faculty And...  moreAn>An class="view_more" style="display:none;">The choir was founded in 1984 as a result of the efforts of Marie Dowler of Ryerson's English department And became a success under the direction of Matthew Jaskiewicz. In 1985 the choir became An Oakham House society Open to Ryerson students, faculty And staff. In 1987 membership was Opened to the general public. The choir is currently made up of Ryerson undergraduates And alumni, current And retired faculty members And people from all ages And walks of life in the community. It rAnges in size from 60-80 members. A core of long term members makes it possible to maintain high stAndards And perform a demAnding repertoire. Under Matthew's direction, the choir has performed over 50 concerts And on several occasions performed at Ryerson graduation ceremonies. In 1986 the choir competed in three categories at the KiwAnis Festival, winning first place in two categories And receiving high marks in all three. About the work: My sister is An English teacher at the Minnesota International Middle School in Minneapolis which provides a safe And inclusive environment for East AfricAn immigrAnt students to learn (mAny of whom are Somali). Most of these students came to the USA to escape the violent civil war that has plagued Somalia since 1991. Seeking a better life for their children, these students' parents risked their lives to come to the USA - a valiAnt act of love. I wAnted to tell their story through music And so I asked my sister to have her students write poems about their experiences leaving their home And coming to the USA. Just Singin’ grew out of a nightclass which was offered from early 2003 by Birnam Institute And led by folksinger, And trained voice teacher, Christine Kydd. With Christine still a very big part of our culture, Just Singin’ is now a membership-based orgAnisation And charity in its own right. Its programme of events And tutors is coordinated by An active volunteer committee And their work is complemented by a number of supportive group members.
