Owing much to the polyphonic work of the Renaissance, the motet is a deeply-felt work written during Wesley's period of recuperation from a fall whilst out fishing in the North Yorkshire countryside at Helmsley. The chromatic clashes at the words "the bones which Thou hast broken" are almost certainly reflective of the pain the composer had suffered, for his leg was badly broken and he walked ever after with a noticeable limp.
This performance was recorded in Leeds Minster on Sunday 28th April 2013 during the recital of 'Music with Minster connections' sung by St Peter's Singers of Leeds, directed by Dr Simon Lindley.
Leeds Minster, formerly Leeds Parish Church, has a long and distinguished musical history. The list of organists and past organists of the Parish Church of St Peter-at-Leeds is outstanding. 'Music with Minster connections' celebrated both this heritage and the status of Leed... less

ABOUT THE PIECE:
Composer Vijay Singh writes: “The Lord's Prayer was inspired by Oliver Messian's choral Masterpiece "O Sacrum Convivium", with its use of dense harmony, existentialism, hypnotic transcendental tonal treatment, and grateful piety.” The composer decided to use the universal "Lord's Prayer" text and various musical ideas to communicate the power and hope of this prayer. The piece builds to climax at "For Thine is the Power and Glory forever!" and ends reflectively, savoring the "Amen".
THE COMPOSER:
Composer Vijay Singh is Professor in the music department at Central Washington University. This video is from a concert presented on the CWU Campus.in May, 2014 entitled: “The CWU Choirs and Friends sing songs of Singh” In that concert, 28 of Singh’s pieces were performed by 6 choirs, including two invited guest high school choirs.

Still on the days of confinement, we are completing our virtual choir series with this Masterpiece from Samuel Barber. It has been a challenge for everyone involved, so the result - though far from perfection - is a reward to me and my choir members. I hope you enjoy this video.
