Chris has written many of Show Of Hands’ big hits including, ‘Lily and the Rose’ which he wrote for Miranda Sykes and The lost Sound. We’ve performed this together with Show Of Hands, at their 25thAnniversary concert in The Royal Albert Hall in 2017.
Chris explains the background of ‘Though We Lie Underground’ for us:
I first came across the stories surrounding the curious tradition of West Country miners singing carols underground when listening to a recording of Alan Lomax’s extraordinary live BBC 1957 broadcast “Sing Christmas and the Turn of the Year”, a feat of radio genius involving hundreds of performers and groups all over the country, seamlessly brought together for one scintillating hour.
At one point, Lomax described how the miners of devon and Cornwall would celebrate Christmas underground in an almost pagan fashion: they would select the largest lump of tin ore they could handle, set it up in... less

Angels where you soar up to God’s own light, take my own lost bird on your hearts tonight
and as grief once more mounts to heaven and sings,
let my love be heard whispering in your wings.
"Ángeles, donde se elevan a la luz de Dios, tomen mi propio pájaro perdido en sus corazones esta noche y como el dolor una vez más se eleva al cielo y canta, que mi amor se oiga susurrando en sus alas"

I have to admit that I’m not really a lyric person. I might have been listening to a particular pop song in English for years when I suddenly realise...

It’s been beautifully arranged by Moira Smiley and Vida, but was written by John Prine, a Chicago folk musician.
There are two new singers in this ensemble: Rosi, a deep dark bass, standing back left, and Marie, sitting at the front right with the cowboy hat on. Both singers have been a wonderful addition to our choir.
Adele in the rocking chair, Annabelle standing right, and Katherine with baby Erin (who loveS harmony!) complete the group, all of which you have seen many times in concert! We love the song and hope you do too.
With this song, we are raising money for a charity close to our hearts, Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton. Throughout both lockdowns they have had a huge number of call outs, as more people have been exploring the moors and getting into difficulties. As... less

His love is like a burning star
It mends our hearts and gives us peace
His love is a gift to you
Your Son came to us
And he showed us how to love
He taught us to care for each other
To love people everywhere
He gave his life so that we all could live
Sing praise to the Son of God
Give us the power of your love
Let us serve you Lord our God
Give us your strength and your wisdom
To be disciples for all time
Let us not forget your teaching
Give love in the name of the Lord
Feel the love of the Lord
See His love everywhere
I contacted Bill Sveglini through the "Composers’ forum" and he was very interested in my multivocal efforts. So I decided to have a go at performing some of his works. They are in a style that I’ve not sung for over 20 years (evangelical church choir), but the old fervour still comes out in the performance: I was transported back to those good old days as I sang. This piece i... less
