May God give you long life. Literally: years and epochs of happiness to you. They are sung at feasts or supras as they are called in Georgian, where participants wish one another health and a long life. This is an urban version. This type of song is sometimes labelled Kutaisian because the town of Kutaisi (in western Georgia) is considered the centre in western urban songs, which are based on European harmony. This concert was the culmination of a six-week project which creates a choir from scratch for one night only. Each winter and summer, Chris Rowbury gathers a random bunch of singers from in and around Ipswich. There are no auditions and all songs are taught and learnt by ear. The choir begins by emulating...  more“The Wind” was commissioned by the Organization of American Kodály Educators as a result of Rich Campbell winning the Ruth Boshkoff Composition Prize. The text is from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1885 A Child’s Garden of Verses. The choir begins by emulating the sound of the wind, and then sings directly to the wind, describing the many things the wind does while questioning just who or what the wind is. The piece, inspired by Kodály’s philosophy, develops a folk-like melody in a modern context. The rhythmic piano accompaniment keeps the piece bouncing brightly until its exciting conclusion. The Boychoir has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Prague Philharmonic, Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion on National Public Radio, amongst others. This season our choirboys will be featured in Minnesota American Choral Directors Association’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Golden Finale Concert along with first-time appearances with the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra, Edina Chorale and St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church Choir (Orff’s Carmina Burana).
