Myroslaw Antonowycz conducted the worship services in C...  moreThe basis for the Utrecht Byzantine Choir lies in a group of Ukrainian seminarians with its professors who came to the Netherlands shortly after the Second World War. Born and raised in Ukrainia dr. Myroslaw Antonowycz conducted the worship services in Culemborg for the reestablished Ukrainian seminar. After the seminarians were graduated, they swarmed out to fulfill their priestly vocation for the Ukrainians all over the world. The now outside the monastery walls well-known seminarian Choir fell apart while applications for the singing of liturgies and concerts throughout the Netherlands, kept coming. On the initiative of Msgr. AG Smith, dr. Antonowycz founded the Utrecht Byzantine Choir on February 9, 1951, consisting of only Dutch men, who specialized in singing the liturgy according to the Slavic-Byzantine rite. In cooperation with the Apostolate of the Eastern Churches, the UBK initially only sang liturgies according to the Byzantine Rite. The ensemble is made up of undergraduates and graduates of Cambridge University, and currently the Choirs of King’s, St John’s and Trinity colleges are represented. Recent concerts have included performances of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories for Maundy Thursday (Feria Quinta), Monteverdi madrigals and anthems by Byrd. The ensemble has also performed Music by Ligeti, Rheinberger and arrangements by Philip Lawson. Future engagements include a lunchtime concert in the Cambridge St John’s Music Festival, as well as concerts at Jesus and Caius colleges.  less

Auditions held every August and January.

With a great sense of fun and a unique style of entertainment, the chorus has gripped audiences during its history of 34 years. Our close knit membership of nearly sixty guys has a strong commitment to Vocal and performance excellence. Cottontown particularly enjoy competing in both national and international barbershop competitions. Well respected stages around the UK including the London Palladium have given us the opportunity to wow audiences with stirring harmonies, emotional lyrics, exciting choreography and visual effects.
