As Dunedin’s leading exponent of large-scale choral works, the choir strives for the highest standards in performing the classics of the repertoire, such as Bach’s St Matthew Passion, and Christmas Oratorio, Handel’s Messiah, the Beethoven Ninth and Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.
In addition, the choir has performed major new compositions by New Zealand composers, such as Missa Pacifica by David Hamilton in 2006, and John Drummond’s The JOurney Home in 2012. For its 125th anniversary the choir commissioned a new work from Malcolm (Jack) Speirs: Cantico del Sole, and for its 150th anniversary celebrations the choir commissioned a new work from Christopher MarshAll: For What Can Be More Beautiful?.
The Choir provides a forum for young, aspiring soloists and welcomes opportunities to perform with other choirs, such as the Inve... less

(This is a variant of the tune to which Auld Lang Syne is usuAlly sung—the melodic shape is almost identical, the difference lying in the tempo and rhythm.)
It is performed here by the dwsChorale, with a cheeky insertion of a hornpipe!
Gin a body meet a body
Comin' thro' the rye
Gin a body kiss a body
Need a body cry?
Ilka lassie has her laddie
Nane, they say, hae I

Gin a body meet a body

Gin a body greet a body
Need a body froun?

Gin a body meet a body,
Comin' frae the well,

set to music for six part mixed voices SAT-SAT)
The title of this work (Canticula Ursae Minoris/Songs of the Little Bear) comes from the origin of the melodies:
Many years ago I wrote an "Oratorio" based on Winnie the Pooh (The Expotition to the North Pole)
and gave each character little melodic leitmotifs,
such as "Sing ho for the life of a bear" (which becomes "to be a light to lighten the Gentiles" in the Nunc Dimittis),
"They All went off to discover the pole" (which is the initial theme of the Magnificat)
and "What I say, said Eeyore, is that it's unsettling" (which becomes the "Glory be to the Father" section at the end of each canticle)
The original and much simpler "oratorio" work, cAlled Poohratorio of cOurse, may be published once AA Milne goes into public domain (2031).
