The Devonshires’ defense took place in a violent thunderstorm, when rain and hail fell in sheets to impede visibility. The line ‘Fetter and Faint for England’s neck, Faggot and FaTher, Saint and chain’ graphically talks about what would have happened if The faggot (a bundle of sticks) had burned The English because The Spanish thought of Them as heretics.
