The concert theme focused on the damaging nature of gossip and the larger meaning of how words are powerful and have greater impact than we realize.
Based on a well-known Jewish folk tale, the piece is largely sung in Yiddish, featuring narrated passages in English, with the moral resolution in Hebrew.
Performed: November 19 2016
Location: Studios of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, LES, NYC.

‘Devon, O Devon, in Wind and Rain’ celebrates Drake and the bravery of Devon men attempting to relieve Ladysmith. The Devonshires’ defense took place in a violent thunderstorm, when rain and hail fell in sheets to impede visibility. The line ‘Fetter and Faint for England’s neck, Faggot and Father, Saint and chain’ graphically talks about what would have happened if the faggot (a bundle of sticks) had burned the English because the Spanish thought of them as heretics.

"I Don't Know which Direction the Wind is Blowing" is an iconic piece written by XU Zhimo (1897-1931). The repeating lyrics bring the atmosphere and feeling of "Dream"; while the expressive arrangement implies XU's hope and passion towards life.

This song can be understood on two levels.
At first sight it is a simple sentimental piece,
but beneath it lies a history of pure imagination,
enchantment and impossibility.
The composer already realises he is
no longer feeling what he is writing,
he is just weaving a spell,
over an ostinato guitar motif,
to try to bring the feelings back
(hence the title "Incantation").
He has found in his life that
whenever he writes a song
for the object of his desire,
he has already
begun to stop feeling that desire ...
it is a sign that the relationship
is about to change
or disappear.
But the whole thing is indeed
enchantment and magic:
you can dream and
you can take the song at face value
if you wish.

"High Flight"
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting Wind along, and flung
my eager craft through footless halls of air . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I’ve topped the Wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

The angel Gabriel (the old Basque Carol) sung by Roundelay

1 The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
his wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame;
"All hail," said he "Thou holy maiden Mary,
most highly favoured lady." Gloria!
2 "For know, a blessed mother thou shalt be
all generations laud and honour thee,
thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold;
most highly favoured lady."
Gloria!
3 Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head;
"To me be as it pleases God," she said.
"my soul shall laud and magnify his holy name."
Most highly favoured lady, Gloria!
4 Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born
In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say,
"Most highly favoured lady, Gloria!" less
