Background. In the 1970s I visited Poland twice and fell in love with Polish choral music -- and Lulajże Jezuniu became one of my favourite Christmas carols in any language.
While flying from Ottawa to Vancouver in December 2017, I felt inspired and arranged most of this piece while at 30,000 feet! I must have been quite a sight conducting away in my aisle seat, with my head phones plugged into my computer.
I have dedicated Lulajże Jezuniu to the late Adam and Helena Kmiotek, who showed me such generosity of spirit as my hosts in Szczecin during my second Polish trip.

It is based on a Czech Furiant (a fast dance with metre shifting between duple and triple time) called "Sedlák, sedlák", which was also sung as a light-hearted and frolicsome Song gently poking fun at a corpulent farmer.
The words of the carol are by Malcolm Sargent himself.
Girls and boys, leave your toys. make no noise,
Kneel at His crib and worship Him.
At Thy shrine, Child divine, we are Thine,
Our Saviour's here.
"Hallelujah!" the church bells ring,
"Hallelujah!" the angels sing,
"Hallelujah!" from ev'rything.
All must draw near.

Individual Song parts recorded by the choristers using their own equipment following lead videos made by our Director, Pierre. Pierre then put together the video using Final Cut Pro.
A message from the Director:
"Christmas 2020 is the first in our 43-year history where we haven’t been able to stage live concerts, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still sing. So, after planning, rehearsing and recording, we are proud to present "What Child is This?" - one selection from our Virtual Christmas Concert of 6 carols. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nstkQZ9-5Gs
We hope you will enjoy our renditions of old favourites, some in new settings by our director, along with a few lesser known pieces from our carol archives.
I cannot be more proud of my musical colleagues for forging through the complex logistics of putting these videos together. I thank them for their loyalty to our fans and their fellow c... less

It is a Medley of three 19th century Songs—"Dixie", a minstrel Song that became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy since the Civil War; "All My Trials", originally a Bahamian lullaby, but closely related to African American spirituals, and well-known through folk music revivalists. Sung as part of a concert at St. Johns Church, Keynsham, on 6th April 2013 to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease Association. less
