They were under the tu...  moreEast Rand Male Symphony was established in August 1990 by the members of the then Kenneth Masekela SSS Boys Choir after winning the TUATA National School Choir Competition in the category of Boys Choirs for the 4th successive year. They were under the tutelage of Mojalefa Motloung. The Choir is made up of members from the East Rand which is now affectionately known as Ekurhuleni. The young men who established the Choir in 1990 are now responsible men taking their place in their communities. We currently have over 35 members of which ages range from 20 to 50. We are still under the baton of Mojalefa Motloung who also forms part of our Conductors Forum.  less

While the majority of the singers are undergraduate Music majors, membership is open to all students at the university through an audition process. The group has achieved an impressive reputation of excellence, having been chosen each of the last twenty years to perform at conventions or festivals around the country: the Pennsylvania Music Educators State Conference; the Eastern Division Music Educators National Conference; the Music Educators National Convention; the American Choral Directors Association Pennsylvania State Conference, and the ACDA Eastern Division Convention. The Choir is renowned on the international stage as well, representing the US at competitions and festivals around the world. Currently numbering 18 singers, FCC has a broad repertoire featuring everything from early Music and traditional pieces to the works of contemporary composers such as Whitacre, Pärt, Lauridsen and McMillan, and is highly regarded at home and abroad. In 2011, we travelled to Trondheim, Norway, to take part in Sangforening, a major festival featuring hundreds of Norwegian Choirs, and were the first ever foreign Choir invited to take part. 2012 saw us visit Languedoc, France, where we gave concerts in beautiful old churches in Alzonne and Montréal, near Carcassonne. We are active in radio and television, having featured in many broadcasts of recorded and live services by the Irish national broadcaster RTE, including one recorded in Swords CoI church which was broadcast on Christmas day, 2010 and Easter and Advent services in 2012 and 2013.
