The Choir has built an international reputation and has made it a trademark to include newly written Music in its programmes. This is thanks to the work of Knut Nystedt (b. 1915), organist, composer and conductor, who returned to Norway in 1964 after studying in the USA and started a Choir at the Music department of the University of Oslo. The Choir continues to recruit members from the department of Music, as well as from the Norwegian Academy of Music in more recent years. The American choral tradition in which Nystedt was trained emphasises the importance of new Music – a practice Nystedt brought back with him to Oslo. Knut Nystedt’s Music became a vital element of Schola Cantorum’s repertoire. Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl became conductor in 2002, and has further established the Choir’s firm position in Norway’s Musical life. She has continued Nystedt’s tradition of performing modern Music. We do a wide variety of Music from Renaissance to contemporary and from a cappella to works with chamber orchestra. We are a fun loving, very friendly group. However, our Music comes first and hard work is required of all. An audition is required. Our Music Director is William R. Thomas.

Kokopelli has been a featured ensemble at many events, provincially, nationally, and internationally. These include the Rocky Mountain National Music Festival, Podium (the biannual conference of the Association of Canadian Choral Communities), the regional conference of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the International Society of Music Educators conference, and others. In addition to many North American cities, the Choir has toured to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Malaysia, Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Zambia. Kokopelli is often the ambassador for the Choir association and as such, has received several awards for their work with youth, Music education, and the African Projects Fund. While the majority of the singers are undergraduate Music majors, membership is open to all students at the university through an audition process. The group has achieved an impressive reputation of excellence, having been chosen each of the last twenty years to perform at conventions or festivals around the country: the Pennsylvania Music Educators State Conference; the Eastern Division Music Educators National Conference; the Music Educators National Convention; the American Choral Directors Association Pennsylvania State Conference, and the ACDA Eastern Division Convention. The Choir is renowned on the international stage as well, representing the US at competitions and festivals around the world.
