Having been friends and in the choral scene for twenty years, the two have been talking about a project like this for around fifteen years. Spurred by the release of the revised English missal, Alejandro and Eugene both thought it a good time to finally restart the project that they had shelved for some time. Only now, the idea wasn’t just to end with a single album; the idea was now to establish a ministry that would introduce a new generation of music to Philippine Catholics. The new ministry would have as its aim the creation of beautiful music to help the faithful to a more prayerful, solemn state of mind. After singing together in various choirs, they came to realise that their voices blended effortlessly, creating an exclusive sound and experience. They have now, in an understated way, established themselves as a much sought after ensemble with followers all over the world. They’ve travelled extensively, performing at weddings, corporate events and concerts in venues as far afield as Rome, Los Angeles and Saudi Arabia, but they’re more than happy to perform closer to home ! With the addition of Richard Larson as artistic director and a handful of additional singers, the group quickly found a footing in the cultural fabric of Denver, Colorado. Now entering its 15th full season of performing, the group has expanded into an auditioned ensemble of 54 volunteer singers who meet weekly to rehearse. Many of the singers come from schools with strong choral music programs, such as Augustana, Brigham Young, Concordia, Luther, St. Olaf, Wartburg, and the University of Northern Colorado. Kantorei established itself as one of the nation’s premier choral ensembles after performing as an auditioned choir for the 2003 National American Choral Directors Association Conference at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
