This particular setting was composed with a small mixed-ability choir in mind, so The voices are mainly in two parts (men's and women's voices), splitting to four parts (SATB) occasionally, where The words suggest it. The musical style is reminiscent of The 19th century although The piano part does go into 20th century style syncopation at times.

The second performance of The newly commissioned "City Songs" by Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds, Australian Poet Emma Jones and narrator Imogen Heap. The work was commissioned by The Voices Now Festival and first performed in The Roundhouse, London, June 2013. The second performance took place on Friday 25th October 2013 in St. Columb's Hall, Derry as part of The inaugural choral festival. This second performance featured The Holst Singers and Roundhouse Choir from London, Codetta, Encore Contemporary Choir, Colmcille Ladies and The Music Promise Junior Choir from Derry and The Orchestra of Ireland, conducted by Stephen Layton.  less

The melody paints The landscape, written in a minor key, which is Then resolved to The major when his sadness finds resolution in this beauty that he experienced. SynaesThesia is incorporated by using specific harmonies and rhythmic patterns to imitate what The composer might imagine The Poet saw, and The emotions he felt. This ultimately transforming The piece into a choral musical painting.  less
