With the addition of Richard Larson as artistic director and a handful of additional Singers, the group quickly found a footing in the cultural fabric of Denver, Colorado. Now entering its 15th full season of performing, the group has expanded into an auditioned ensemble of 54 volunteer Singers who meet weekly to rehearse. Many of the Singers come from schools with strong choral music programs, such as Augustana, Brigham Young, Concordia, Luther, St. Olaf, Wartburg, and the University of Northern Colorado. Kantorei established itself as one of the nation’s premier choral ensembles after performing as an auditioned choir for the 2003 National American Choral Directors Association Conference at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Each winter and summer, Chris Rowbury gathers a random bunch of Singers from in and around Ipswich. There are no auditions and all songs are taught and learnt by ear. Our purpose is “to sing, in harmony, a variety of music for the enjoyment of the members as well as to give public and private performances for the listening pleasure of others”. During our musical season (September – June), the choir practices on Monday evenings from 7 – 9:30 PM at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Richmond. In addition to our weekly practices we usually plan one or two workshops with a choral clinician, as well as evenings with guest directors. We have two major performances per year, a Family Christmas Concert in December and a Spring Concert in May. We are very involved with our community and, by giving benefit concerts, help to raise funds for other organizations such as the Richmond Hospice Society, Canadian Cancer Foundation and Tim Horton’s Kids Camps. In the beginning, Greenwood Singers specialized in the performance of a cappella music from different stylistic periods. Its programming has now expanded to include works with soloists, instrumental ensembles and chamber orchestra. A versatile ensemble, the choir has performed frequently with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in a wide variety of programs which have included Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, Holst’s The Planets, family Christmas concerts, the concert version of Jerome Kern’s Showboat, Orff’s Carmina Burana (with the Alberta Ballet) and the ESO’s 1992 reunion with the British rock group, Procol Harum.
