HIMIG SANGHAYA is a coined Tagalog phrase for MUSIC of THE HIGHEST HONOR. The directors, conductors and members of HIMIG SANGHAYA DO NOT TAKE SINGING LIGHTLY. They are a group of very young and talented artists who revel in their music, nurturing it as if it were an integral part of their being. They own up to a technical and musical maturity only to be surpassed by world-renowned and seaSoned performers. They train very hard and continuously challenge themselves to achieve higher goals by aiming to master pieces of ever increasing levels of difficulty, and never fail to enthrall their audiences with repertoire that ranges from Renaissance to the 21st century, and experimenting with pieces influenced by lavish flavours of cultures worldwide.  less

Spera means hope in Latin, and it is a members’ shared vision on music. All members studied a Sacred choral music under Koji Oguchi, choir director, when they were high school students. They were deeply touched by Oguchi’s music and established the Ensemble Choir SPERA. Making its debut in concert in March 2014 at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, SPERA’s music was highly prized and well-reviewed in newspapers. It serves in Masses and services and performs in concerts as an ecumenical choir, composed of students from Kitasato University, International Christian University, Hitotsubashi University and Rikkyo University. We have enjoyed performing under conductors Christopher Foy, Imelda Leah, Jon HenderSon and Kate Shipway who took over as Musical Director in June 2013.
