"Digapoli" was the name of the small village where the workers who built the Cancano dam lived. The Cancano dam is located in Valtellina, in norther Italy. DIGAPOLI (Cancano-Valdidentro) è il nome della piccola cittadina che si era formata per ospitare i lavoratori durante la costruzione delle dighe di Cancano (Diga-Polis) Fuggì la notte a passi di cerbiatta e già in cantiere urla la sirena. Canta, operaio, canta a gola piena, che non abbiamo galli per destarci, non abbiamo campane. ​Se la tua voce sa di vino ancora (bevuto a tarda notte alla taverna) è lieta la tua voce, l'eco chiara nell'aria sgombrata dai sogni. More info and score can be found on www.stefanklaverdal.com “See, darkness covers the earth” is built on a previous piece for bass clarinet (or cello) and computer called "One of the seven angels". The title is a quote from book of revelations, and "See darkness..." is in its turn a series of other quotes that the first title refer to in various ways. It turns out that the references to me felt very contemporary and had to do with the current trends in society and that meant that I could both recompose something old, use new old texts that referred to an old piece of mine and construct a very contemporary and important piece that may both say something about our time and give hope for a better future. About the work: My sister is an English teacher at the Minnesota International Middle School in Minneapolis which provides a safe and inclusive environment for East African immigrant students to learn (many of whom are Somali). Most of these students came to the USA to escape the violent civil war that has plagued Somalia since 1991. Seeking a better life for their children, these students' parents risked their lives to come to the USA - a valiant act of love. I wanted to tell their story through music and so I asked my sister to have her students write poems about their experiences leaving their home and coming to the USA.
