CELEBRATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF RALPH VAUGHN WILLIAMS
Instructed by the greats including Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and friend Gustav Holtz, Composer Ralph Vaughn Williams was one of the first to gather folk songs and carols from around the countryside of England in the early 20th century. He found his identity as a national composer with his synthesis of folk music, classical training and the experience gained as Musical Editor of the English Hymnal. Composed over the span of four decades culminating in 1949, Folksongs of the Four Seasons is a cantata of 16 songs commissioned by The Women’s Institute; four for each season. The Winter section take the listener on a journey through the Christmas practices of the working poor in Victorian England.

As the introduction states, Eric Whitacre's famous "Sleep" was originally composed to Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", but when Whitacre realized the Frost estate was not releasing permission for musical settings of the poem, Charles Silvestri wrote the poem "Sleep" around the music Whitacre had written. To honor the inspiration the poem gave Mr. Whitacre, and to further honor all poets who inspire choral composers, we presented this beloved piece with the original Frost lyrics. less

THE SEAL LULLABY (Eric Whitacre)
Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us,
And black are the waters that sparkled so green.
The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us
At rest in the hollows that rustle between.
Where billow meets billow, then soft by thy pillow;
Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease!
The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee,
Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas.

Oran went to an early morning workshop with Eric Whitacre during the Mondiale Choral Competition in Laval, Quebec. At the end of the workshop, an audience member requested that our choir sing one of Eric Whitacre's pieces. We were doing Seal Lullaby for the competition, so we just jumped right into that one with Eric conducting us!!!!!!!!!!! It was pretty darn awesome! This also features Jen McMillan on piano. The piano was really close to where I was standing, so that's why it sounds super loud in this video. Sorry. less
