Victor Hugo's heart-wrenching 1847 poem describes a walk he plans to take tomorrow morning ("Demain, dès l'aube") through the countryside to his daughter Léopoldine's grave four years after her tragic death in a boating accident, which also took the life of her husband Charles who had tried to save her.
Sincere thanks to Matthew Curtis (choraltracks.com) for recording "Demain, dès l'aube."

"How heavy lies the heart" has drawn inspiration from the traditional French Christmas carol, "Quelle est cette odeur agréable", which John Gay also set as a boisterous drinking song in the Beggar's Opera, "Fill every glass, for wine inspires us!" In addition, the song draws inspiration from Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua.
In early 2018, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted.
"How heavy lies the heart" was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful.

Satie/rain: "As dawn breaks,” #1 (Summer) Ottawa Four Seasons Suite (sung by Matthew Curtis)
Erik Satie's Sarabande No. 1 is one of my favourite piano pieces. For a long time, I felt there was an a cappella choral piece hiding within it, in plain sight. One day I got inspired and gave it a try.

Creating a choral adaptation of a piano piece has its challenges. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year.
Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted.
"As dawn breaks" was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful.
NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group ... less

“Sweetheart of the sun"
Composed by Eric William Barnum
Text from “Ruth” by Thomas Hood
Text:
She stood so fair amid the corn
Clasped by the golden light of morn
Like the sweetheart of the sun
Who many a glowing kiss had won
On her cheek an autumn flush
Deeply ripened;—such a blush
In the midst of brown was born
Like red poppies grown with corn
Round her eyes her tresses fell
Which were blackest none could tell
But long lashes veiled a light
That had else been all too bright
And her hat, with shady brim
Made her tressy forehead dim;—
Thus she stood amid the stooks
Praising God with sweetest looks:—
Sure, I said, heaven did not mean
Where I reap thou shouldst but glean
Lay thy sheaf adown and come
Share my harvest and my home

‘Devon, O Devon, in Wind and rain’ celebrates Drake and the bravery of Devon men attempting to relieve Ladysmith. the Devonshires’ defense took place in a violent thunderstorm, When rain and hail fell in sheets to impede visibility. the line ‘Fetter and Faint for England’s neck, Faggot and Father, Saint and chain’ graphically talks about what would have happened if the faggot (a bundle of sticks) had burned the English because the Spanish thought of them as heretics.
