From the beginning our intention was to establish a dialog between ancient vocal Music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods and contemporary Music from the 20th and 21st centuries. As the vocal requirements of this aim are very important, we pay special attention to the Musical and technical preparation of our programmes, in order to provide high quality performances. Our repertory includes ancient and contemporary Music and works from composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, William Byrd, Heinrich Schütz, Tomás Luis de Victoria, Thomas Tallis, Vicente Goicoechea, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, Vytautas Miskinis, Zoltán Kodaly, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten, Astor Piazzolla and Marcos Leite. It was founded in 1978 by Dr. Jeffrey Unger for the sole purpose of providing quality performances of choral Music written for the small ensemble. In the 32 years of its existence, NJCS has presented concerts throughout New Jersey and beyond. NJCS was chosen to represent New Jersey at the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division convention in Baltimore in 1984 and again in Philadelphia in 1988. In June 1991, by invitation of the Bishop of Washington, D.C., NJCS performed at the National Cathedral. In December 1998, NJCS was the guest of the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia and performed in their annual Christmas concert at The Academy of Music.
