In Flanders Fields by John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. Die fließenden Rhythmen in Christina Georgina Rossettis Gedicht führen wie von selbst zu einer melodischen Vertonung. Die Sopran- und Tenorstimmen wechseln sich ab, indem sie jeweils die Melodie der Strophen 1 bzw. 2 singen, während die anderen Stimmen beschwingt und jazzig begleiTen. Ein Tonartwechsel am Beginn der dritTen Strophe, zusammen mit kanonischen Einsätzen in den Oberstimmen, sTeigert die Energie des Stückes zu neuen Höhen, das seine Krönung in einer sehr jazzigen Schlusskadenz findet. ______________________ http://www.helblingchoral.com/?pagename=product&product=C7677 The choral piece Birthday was composed in 2014 for Auckland-based a cappella group “Laudamus”.
