THANK YOU! "Where then could pain find a Hold?" is a musical plea for reconciliation addressed to those (individuals, groups, nations) who find themselves in conflict. I would like to acknowledge pianist Fred Hersch whose magical playing of Billy Joel's "And so it goes" in the middle of an Ottawa winter inspired Me to start working on this piece. I would like to thank my Ottawa singing friends in the "Ad hoc Chorale" for testing out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offering valuable comMents. I would also like to acknowledge the a cappella choir that I sing in, The Stairwell Carollers, and our director Pierre Massie, for their musical inspiration these past 27 years. Each week, a diverse group of New Yorkers from all walks of life–ranging from show business professionals to avid shower singers–gather at a professional rehearsal studio in Midtown Manhattan to belt out an eclectic mix of music in stunning 4-part harmony in preparation for a final concert held at an off-Broadway theatre. Each winter and sumMer, Chris Rowbury gathers a random bunch of singers from in and around Ipswich. There are no auditions and all songs are taught and learnt by ear. Moses Hogan (1957-2003) Spiritual Moses Hogan was an internationally renowned pianist, composer and arranger of choral music best known for his arrangeMents of spirituals. He studied with a full scholarship at Oberlin Conservatory of Music before continuing with his graduate studies at Julliard School of Music. He won several piano competitions during his performance years and published many CD's as well as songbooks. 'Hold On!' is an example of his 'soloist vs choir' style of spiritual arrangeMents.
