As the Introduction states, Eric Whitacre's famous "Sleep" was originally composed to Rober... moreAs part of The Vocal Art Ensemble's "INKSPELL--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts, this piece started the 'modern poetry' section of the concert. As the Introduction states, Eric Whitacre's famous "Sleep" was originally composed to Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", but when Whitacre realized the Frost estate was not releasing permission for musical settings of the poem, Charles Silvestri wrote the poem "Sleep" around the music Whitacre had written. To honor the inspiration the poem gave Mr. Whitacre, and to further honor all poets who inspire choral composers, we presented this beloved piece with the original Frost lyrics. less

He shunned the Countess’ parties; he yawned at town meetings;
he would not let the doctor take his pulse; he did not go to church on Sundays.
Oh what a strange man is the Man in the Castle!
First Madrigal:
Ev’ry Sunday afternoon, soft winds fanning the fading sun,
all the respectable folk went out walking slowly on the pink promenade by the sea.
Proud husbands velvety-plump, with embroider’d silk-pale ladies.
At four o’clock they all greeted each other; They spoke ill of each other at six:
“How d’you do?” “Very well, thank you.”
“Have you heard?” “Pray, do tell me.”
“Tcha tcha tcha tcha tcha ra tcha ra tcha...”
