In the 16th century, this Jewish Italian composer and violinist, fellow-student and collaborator of Claudio Monteverdi, wrote some thirty liturgical pieces for three to eight mixed voices. They fell into oblivion. In 1870, in Paris, Samuel Naumbourg, helped by the young Vincent d'Indy, brought them together in a volume and made them partially adopted by some synagogues. "Shir Lama'alot" for five voices is a composition taken from Rossi's book "Hashirim Asher Lishlomo", printed in Venice in 1623.

I love the tempo, phrasing, rubato and expressiveness. The paraphrase of Psalm 121 is mine. I wrote this as my way of dealing with the loss of two choir members who both suddenly died the first year I was in Montana. It was my way of turning to the Psalms for prayer. The recent pictures were taken in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

Two points of note:
First, the composition grew out of the feeling that all 4 voices should start on the same note, grow outwards and then come back to that same note at the end. The rest just seemed to evolve on its own, seemingly guided by some external force.
Second, unusually, I have asked choirs (where possible) to sing this without any breaks, via staggered breathing, as I wanted to highlight the deep conviction underlying the words of the Psalm, as one single thread of deep belief that moves from beginning to end.
Sincere thanks to Matthew Curtis (choraltracks.com) for recording "Psalm 23."
As always, comments are welcomed. Email me at rain@magma.ca, if you'd like more info.
I would like to acknowledge the a cappella choir that I sing in, The Stairwell Carollers, and our director Pierre Massie, for their musical inspiration these past 26 years.

Broad melodic arches and an enchanting sensuousness of sound characterize Chris Artley's setting of Psalm 121. He sets the choir, the individual groups of voices as well as organ and trumpet ad lib in relationship to each other in an impressively atmospheric manner. It is a moving concert piece that will immediately fascinate the audience. less
